14:10 - 14:45 Fireside Chat: Device, Edge, or Cloud? The Mobile AI Compute Debate

As mobile AI adoption accelerates in China and globally, operators, cloud providers, and device ecosystems face a critical architectural question: where should AI inference run - on device, at the edge, or in the centralised cloud?

AI is not simply increasing mobile network volume; it is fundamentally changing traffic patterns. AI running on mobile devices drives higher uplink demand and creates more interactive, latency-sensitive traffic, forcing mobile operators to rethink edge deployment strategies and traffic management approaches to sustain quality while controlling cost.

This session examines practical solutions and debate the balance between user experience, operational efficiency, and cost in the era of AI-driven mobile networks. It will explore the key trade-offs between latency and user experience, backhaul and power consumption, model size and update velocity, security and data governance, and operational complexity.

Moderator:

  • Xiaoya Sun, Research Analyst, STL Partners

Speakers:

  • Yue Sun, Deputy GM, RAN Product Marketing, ZTE

Guo Xu,Director of Open Source and Software Security Dept., Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute, CAICT (China Academy of Information and Communications Technology)
